Keiko Amenomori-Schmessier
About the artist:
Although born in Ashiya, Japan, the artist completed her primary
schooling in Germany. Her father was involved in the textile trade and she grew up with a keen interest in textiles.
In 1974–78 she studied industrial textile design at the Academy of Fine Art in Hamburg, before moving to Canberra with her husband in 1978. She learnt the art of Shirobi in 1995, while assisting a visiting Japanese artist with a workshop.
About the work:
The work of Keiko Amenomori-Schmeisser reflects a fusion of a present-day Australian experience with an ancient Japanese craft.
Enticed by a medium that physically involves the artist in its process, she has chosen the ancient Japanese art of shibori to express the inspiration she derives from the land of this vast continent.
