Alwin Reamillo
About the artist:
Alwin Reamillo is a Filipino artist who has been living in Perth since 1995. His practice is diverse, encompassing installation, social sculpture and performance.
He has an enduring interest in collaborative approaches and more recently, his social sculptures, like that seen in the 2003 National Sculpture Prize at the National Gallery of Australia, involve working collaboratively and intensively with remote communities in Western Australia.
About the work:
Reamillo’s practice is based on a highly experimental method of making, adapting and combining objects with symbols from popular culture and religious iconography.
The use of crab shells with layered texts and images is one such experimentation that has recurred in his work since the mid 1990s.
